Exemplifying the credit union spirit of “people helping people,” MAFCU and the Massachusetts Credit Union League are excited to be involved in a fundraising effort for Homes for Our Troops, a non-profit organization that helps disabled US servicemen and servicewomen with housing needs.

Homes for Our Troops raises donations of money, building materials and professional labor, and coordinates the process of building or renovating a home to be handicap accessible.

“Our servicemen and servicewomen who return home with life-altering injuries face huge challenges and need homes that can accommodate their new physical reality. This is our way of helping them adapt to their post-war lives,” says Nicole James, MAFCU’s President and CEO, and Chair of the League’s Social Responsibility Committee.

One such veteran is Army Sgt. Peter Rooney of Worthington, MA. Rooney joined the Army in 2001 when he was 18 years old. Rooney was serving in Ramadi, Iraq, when on April 19, 2007, the vehicle he was riding in hit a roadsidebomb. Sgt. Rooney sustained injuries that led to the loss of both his legs above the knees. Donations raised by MAFCU and the Mass. Credit Union League will go towards building a home that is specially adapted for him and will let him live as independently as possible.

MAFCU has already contributed $2,500. Members are welcome to join these fundraising efforts. You may donate online or in person at either of MAFCU’s branch locations. Donations are tax deductible.
